Thailand has again established itself as a premier destination for international residents, ranking third globally in the Expat Insider 2026 survey. But the full story goes beyond the headline.
For many people deciding where to live, retire, or establish a long-term base overseas, Thailand could reasonably be the best overall choice.
Why? Because Thailand leads in several areas that matter once daily life begins.
Happiness: The most important stat is not the overall rank but expat happiness. 86% of expats in Thailand say they are happy with their life, first in the world for expat happiness, well above the global average of 70%. Moreover, 42% of expats surveyed in Thailand would like to stay forever, compared with 27% worldwide.
Cost of living: Thailand ranked first worldwide for general cost of living. About 85% of expats rated living costs positively, versus 39% globally, and the country placed second overall in the Personal Finance Index. A low cost of living matters greatly for those relocating internationally.
Housing affordability: Housing is another standout area. Thailand ranked first in the world for housing affordability and second for ease of finding accommodation. About 79% of expats are satisfied with housing costs, compared with 32% globally.
The local population: Thailand is renowned for the friendliness of its people. The survey found Thailand ranked first worldwide for friendliness, with 89% of respondents describing locals as friendly, and 84% feeling at home. Overall, Thailand placed third in the Ease of Settling In Index, reflecting a welcoming environment that supports longer-term settlement.
Healthcare: Thailand’s international reputation for healthcare is reflected in the survey, with 4th place for healthcare quality and 5th for healthcare availability.
Safety: Around 91% of expats feel personally safe in Thailand, and the country ranked sixth internationally for personal safety.
Why not No. 1? No country scores perfectly across all categories. Thailand’s weaker areas include bureaucracy, environmental concerns, and the local job market. Air quality was a particular concern, and some respondents were less enthusiastic about administrative procedures and employment opportunities. However, a substantial share of expats are retirees, investors, or remote workers, so the weight of these factors varies by individual goals. About 40% of expats in Thailand were retired, compared with 14% globally.
Complete package: The real advantage lies in combining lifestyle, affordability, housing, healthcare, safety, and a strong sense of happiness. Bangkok offers sophisticated city living, Thailand’s islands provide a tropical lifestyle, and other regions offer affordable retirement options, all alongside high-quality healthcare and a welcoming culture. As a result, many expatriates who move here decide to make Thailand their long-term home.
Bottom line: Officially third in the 2026 Expat Insider rankings, Thailand’s overall profile presents a compelling case for top-tier status for many prospective movers. The survey highlights the world’s happiest expats, the lowest-cost-of-living for expats, the friendliest locals, and the most affordable expat housing. Those factors can matter more than the final numerical ranking for people choosing where to build their next chapter abroad. In practice, many international buyers and long-term residents find that Thailand’s combination of lifestyle and affordability works remarkably well.
