From April 1 to April 21, Thailand hosts the Songkran World Festival, peaking in the middle of the month with the traditional Thai New Year Songkran. The main celebrations are scheduled from April 13 to 15, and a record-breaking large-scale celebration is expected this year.
Konstantin Kinel, a marketing manager from the Tourism Authority of Thailand in Moscow, describes the holiday as a colorful and vibrant event with street water battles in which all passers-by participate. However, tourists should expect noisy and active days, as well as possible difficulties in booking hotel rooms and some restrictions.
Phuket, according to «Phuket News», expects more than 264 thousand visitors these days, including a significant number of local tourists. Despite the festival's foreign advertising, the share of bookings from Russia is relatively small, while local residents often plan their vacations and book hotels in advance.
Russian travel agencies note that despite high prices for accommodation during the high season, you can find interesting offers for trips to Thailand in April. Prices for tours vary, but they are higher during the Songkran period compared to the May holidays. As the departure date approaches, the cost of air tickets increases.
Tourists visiting Thailand during Songkran should expect water battles and the use of white talc, a traditional part of the celebration. We advise tourists to protect their valuables and prepare for changes in traffic and opening hours of shops and restaurants.
Finally, Thailand expects about 1.5-1.7 million Russian tourists this year, with 400 thousand already visiting the country in the first two months.
