Since the beginning of 2024, over 620 thousand Russians have visited Thailand, making Russia the third largest source of tourists for the kingdom in the first quarter. This information was provided by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand.
From January to March, Thailand welcomed 9.4 million international visitors, up 44% from last year in the same period. The leaders in the number of arrivals are China with 1.75 million people, followed by Malaysia with 1.7 million, Russia ranks third with 623 thousand, South Korea fourth (559 thousand), and India fifth (473 thousand). At the same time, despite the imminent end of the high tourist season, more than 40 thousand Russians come to the country every week.
Phuket is especially popular among Russians, where 1 million foreigners arrived in the first two months of the year alone, 247 thousand of them from Russia. Thailand expects to attract more than 500 thousand foreign guests to the Songkran Water Festival, which is expected to generate income of 24.4 billion baht (about $700 million).
In 2023, Thailand received 1.48 million Russian guests, who ranked fifth among all national tourist groups. Tourist flow from Russia has reached pre-pandemic levels, and if the current trend continues, the projected number of Russian tourists of 1.6 million in 2024 may be exceeded.
From November 2023, Russians can visit Thailand without a visa for up to 90 days, the rule is valid until the end of April 2024. After this, a return to visa-free stay for up to 30 days is expected.
